Description
A comforting and hearty breakfast casserole featuring flaky biscuits layered with savory sausage gravy, eggs, and optional cheddar cheese, baked to golden perfection for a satisfying morning meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Biscuits
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough
Sausage Gravy
- 1 lb breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
Other
- 6 large eggs
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking during baking.
- Prepare Biscuit Base: Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into quarters, then spread half of these biscuit pieces evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, creating the base layer.
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until thoroughly browned, which will take about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain off any excess fat from the cooked sausage to reduce greasiness.
- Make Gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage in the skillet and stir to combine. Gradually pour in the whole milk while stirring continuously until the gravy thickens. Season the gravy with black pepper to taste.
- Layer First Gravy: Pour half of the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish to create a rich, flavorful layer.
- Add Eggs: In a separate bowl, whisk the six large eggs until smooth, then pour this egg mixture evenly over the gravy layer in the baking dish.
- Add Remaining Biscuit and Gravy: Place the remaining biscuit quarters on top of the eggs and pour the rest of the sausage gravy over the top. If using, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over this final layer.
- Bake: Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the biscuits turn golden brown and the casserole is fully set.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes to set completely. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired before serving warm.
Notes
- To reduce sodium, use low-sodium sausage and milk.
- For a spicier kick, add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the gravy.
- Cheddar cheese is optional but adds extra flavor and richness.
- Letting the casserole rest before serving improves slicing and presentation.
- Use fresh parsley for a bright color and fresh herbal note in garnish.
