Description

Caramelized Feta with Chili-Honey is an irresistible and easy appetizer perfect for any occasion. This Mediterranean-inspired dish features a block of feta cheese baked with olive oil, honey, and chili flakes to create a soft, golden, and slightly caramelized cheese with a perfect balance of spicy and sweet flavors. Serve it warm with crusty bread or crackers for a delightful starter or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 block (7–8 oz) feta cheese (not crumbled)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey (plus more for drizzling)
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes or hot red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves or chopped rosemary (optional)
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Crusty bread or crackers, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Prepare a small baking dish or an oven-safe skillet by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it with olive oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Feta: Pat the feta block dry using a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Place the block into the prepared baking dish or skillet.
  3. Add Flavorings: Drizzle the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of honey over the feta block. Sprinkle with chili flakes, fresh thyme or rosemary if using, and add a few cracks of black pepper to taste.
  4. Bake the Feta: Bake the feta in the preheated oven for 15–18 minutes until it becomes soft and golden around the edges, with a light caramelized top.
  5. Optional Broil for Caramelization: For a deeper, more caramelized finish, broil the feta for an additional 1–2 minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven and drizzle with a little more honey. Serve immediately with warm crusty bread, crackers, or pita for a delightful appetizer.

Notes

  • For a smoky twist, add a dash of smoked paprika before baking.
  • This dish pairs beautifully with wine and works as a stunning centerpiece on a mezze or cheese board.

  • To make this recipe gluten-free, serve with gluten-free bread or crackers.
