Description

These Crispy Jalapeño Corn Wontons are a deliciously crunchy appetizer featuring a spicy, cheesy filling wrapped in crisp fried wonton wrappers. Perfect for parties or a tasty snack, they combine fresh corn, jalapeños, cream cheese, and cheddar for a flavorful bite that pairs perfectly with sweet chili sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 cup corn kernels (fresh, frozen, or canned)
  • 2 fresh jalapeños, finely chopped (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

Assembly & Frying

  • 1 package (about 20) wonton wrappers
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Salt, to taste
  • Sweet chili sauce, for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, mix together the corn kernels, chopped jalapeños, softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, ground cumin, and chopped cilantro if using. Stir until all ingredients are thoroughly combined to create a creamy, flavorful filling.
  2. Fill the wonton wrappers: Lay a wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface. Spoon approximately 1 to 2 teaspoons of the prepared filling into the center of each wrapper, careful not to overfill.
  3. Seal the wontons: Lightly moisten the edges of the wonton wrapper with a small amount of water. Fold the wrapper into a triangle or gather the edges together to form a pouch, pressing firmly to seal and prevent filling leakage during frying.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or wok, enough to submerge the wontons partially or fully, and heat over medium-high heat until the oil reaches 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the wontons: Carefully place the wontons in the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry each batch for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally until the wontons are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  6. Drain excess oil: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried wontons from the oil. Place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil and maintain crispness.
  7. Season and serve: Sprinkle the hot wontons lightly with salt. Serve immediately with sweet chili sauce or your favorite dipping sauce for a spicy, crunchy appetizer experience.

Notes

  • For milder heat, remove all seeds from the jalapeños before chopping.
  • Ensure the wonton edges are sealed tightly to prevent frying oil from entering the filling.
  • Adjust cooking time slightly depending on the size and thickness of your wonton wrappers.
  • Use a thermometer to monitor oil temperature for best frying results and to avoid greasy wontons.
  • These wontons can be made ahead and fried just before serving to maintain crispness.
