Ingredients
Scale
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup canned pumpkin puree (plain, no added sugar or spices)
- 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)
- 1 egg (optional)
- A drizzle of honey (optional)
Dry Ingredients
- 3 cups whole wheat flour (or gluten-free alternative like oat flour)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
Other
- Water as needed
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the canned pumpkin puree, natural peanut butter, and egg (if using). Stir together until smooth and well blended. Add a drizzle of honey if you want a slight sweetness. In a separate bowl, mix the whole wheat flour and ground cinnamon. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring to combine. If the mixture is too dry, add water a tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together but remains firm.
- Shape the twists: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into strips approximately 6-8 inches long and 1 inch wide. Take two strips and twist them around each other to form a twist shape. Repeat until all dough is used.
- Bake the twists: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the twists on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, leaving some space between each piece. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the twists are firm and golden brown. Allow the treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving them to your dog.
Notes
- Make sure to use natural peanut butter free of xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
- If your dog has a wheat allergy, substitute whole wheat flour with oat flour or another gluten-free alternative.
- The egg is optional and helps bind the dough; you can omit it if your dog has an egg allergy.
- Store the treats in an airtight container for up to two weeks or freeze for longer storage.
- Always supervise your dog when giving treats and consult your vet if you introduce new foods.
