Description

Delight in these flaky Pumpkin Twist Pastries, featuring a spiced pumpkin filling wrapped in buttery puff pastry. Perfect for a cozy fall treat or a festive breakfast pastry, these twists combine warm spices with a golden, crisp exterior for a delicious and visually appealing snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

Filling

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water

Optional

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Prepare filling: In a small bowl, combine pumpkin puree, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and vanilla extract until smooth and well blended.
  3. Prepare pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle and cut it lengthwise into two equal sheets using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  4. Assemble layers: Spread the pumpkin filling evenly over one half of the pastry sheet, reaching the edges. Place the second sheet on top and gently press to seal the layers together.
  5. Cut and twist: Slice the layered pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Twist each strip several times to encase the filling and arrange them spaced out on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Apply egg wash: Whisk the egg with water and brush the twists’ surface to achieve a golden and glossy finish when baked.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes, until the pastries puff up beautifully and turn golden brown.
  8. Cool and serve: Let the twists cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar if desired, and enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is properly thawed for easier handling and better texture.
  • Adjust the amount of cinnamon and spices based on your preference for warmth and flavor.
  • Twisting the strips tightly helps keep the filling inside during baking.
  • These pastries can be served warm or at room temperature, making them ideal for make-ahead breakfasts or snacks.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container; reheat briefly in an oven to regain crispness.
  • Powdered sugar is optional but adds a nice touch of sweetness and presentation.
