Ingredients
Scale
Salisbury Steaks
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Mushroom Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Skillet: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and drizzle in the olive oil to prepare for cooking the patties.
- Mix Patty Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to incorporate.
- Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, ensuring they are uniform in size for even cooking.
- Sear Patties: Make sure the skillet is hot and place the patties in it. Sear each side for about 4 minutes until browned. Remove patties and set aside.
- Prepare Mushroom Gravy: In the same skillet, add butter and sauté mushrooms until golden. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir to combine.
- Add Broth and Simmer: Slowly whisk in beef broth and add fresh thyme if using. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until gravy thickens.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Let them simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes to cook through and absorb flavors.
- Serve: Plate the Salisbury steaks with plenty of mushroom gravy poured over. Serve with your choice of mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles for a hearty meal.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh mushrooms and fully cook the patties in the gravy to ensure tenderness.
- You can substitute beef broth with mushroom or vegetable broth for a different flavor profile.
- Leftover Salisbury steak with gravy stores well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop to preserve texture and flavor.
- Adding fresh thyme is optional but adds a lovely herbaceous note to the gravy.
