Description

Delightful Spinach and Feta Puff Pastry Twists featuring a savory blend of spinach, feta, and cream cheese wrapped in flaky puff pastry, perfect as an appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)

Filling

  • 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s at the correct temperature for baking the puff pastry.
  2. Sauté Garlic: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat and add the minced garlic. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant but not browned.
  3. Cook Spinach: Add the chopped fresh spinach to the skillet and cook until wilted, approximately 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  4. Mix Filling: In a bowl, combine the sautéed spinach, crumbled feta cheese, softened cream cheese, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  5. Prepare Puff Pastry: Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over one half of the pastry sheet.
  6. Fold and Seal: Fold the other half of the puff pastry over the filling to form a rectangle. Press down along the edges to firmly seal the pastry and prevent filling from leaking out.
  7. Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Take each strip and twist it into a spiral shape to create the twists.
  8. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the twisted pastries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them evenly to prevent sticking.
  9. Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg and brush the egg wash over each twist to give them a beautiful golden and shiny finish when baked.
  10. Bake: Bake the twists in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown and puffed up. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For crispier twists, ensure the puff pastry is chilled before use.
  • You can substitute spinach with kale or Swiss chard for a different flavor.
  • Adjust seasoning according to taste.
  • Make sure not to overfill the pastry to avoid leakage during baking.
  • These twists can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
